Customs of Suriname and ABC Islands come together

Local | By Correspondent January 24, 2024

PARAMARIBO - The customs corps of Suriname, Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao are gathering in Suriname today during the International Customs Week, which lasts until January 26. This week coincides with International Customs Day on January 26. It is the first time that Suriname is organizing Customs Week.

Customs is responsible for, among other things, protecting citizens from harmful imported products, combating unfair and illegal trade, and securing and facilitating international trade. However, the public will primarily know Customs as an organization that collects various duties and taxes.

Activities and Guests

Approximately ninety guests from the islands are expected this week. The activities begin today with a Meet & Greet. On Wednesday, there is a Sweet Suriname Tour through the city center, followed by an evening of drinks and a cultural evening. Thursday, January 25, is reserved for a sports day, and on Friday, there will be a ceremonial parade and a gala evening.

The Customs Corps of Suriname is celebrating its 160th anniversary this year.
