WILLEMSTAD – Energy company Curoil and the Monuments Platform Curaçao are in discussions regarding the installation of solar panels on the rooftop of Curoil’s headquarters in the historic Scharloo district. Several heritage organizations have expressed concern over the visual and architectural impact of the installation on the protected building.
Curoil recently received an official letter from the Monuments Council of Curaçao, signed by seven organizations that are part of the Monumentenplatform. In the letter, the groups voiced their objections and asked for a review of the situation.
Joint Meeting Held to Explore Solutions
On Thursday, representatives from the Monuments Platform, two delegates from the Ministry of Traffic, Transport, and Spatial Planning (VVRP), and staff from Curoil sat down for a constructive meeting to discuss the concerns and explore possible alternatives.
Both sides expressed a willingness to cooperate and are currently evaluating various options that could lead to a solution that respects both the island’s sustainability goals and its cultural heritage.
A follow-up is expected in the coming weeks, as stakeholders aim to reach a mutually satisfactory outcome.
