Curaçao’s Parliament Opposes Dutch Long-Haul Flight Tax

Local | By Correspondent April 3, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – All eight faction leaders in the Curaçaoan Parliament have signed a protest letter opposing the Dutch government's plan to introduce a tax on long-haul flights. The letter, dated February 25, 2025, was not initially made public but has now come to light.

In the letter, Curaçao’s Parliament urges the Dutch government to exempt the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom from this tax, following the example of France, which has granted similar exemptions to its overseas territories.

The letter is signed by:
Gilbert Doran (MFK)
Anthony Godett (KEM)
Zita Jesus-Leito (Independent)
Corine Djaoen-Genaro (Independent)
Quincy Girigorie (PAR)
Giselle Mc William (MAN)
Rennox Calmes (TPK)
Ruthmilda Larmonie-Cecilia (PNP)

The protest is addressed to the Dutch Minister of Finance, the Minister of Infrastructure, and the Dutch Parliament. Curaçao’s representatives are calling for direct consultations between the Caribbean governments and the Netherlands to develop a fair and practical alternative. Additionally, they demand that a thorough economic and social impact assessment be conducted before the tax is implemented.

The proposed increase in flight taxes, which could add up to €200 per ticket, has raised concerns among Curaçaoan officials that it could significantly reduce the number of Dutch tourists visiting the island.
