WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao’s Action Center Against Undermining (Actiecentrum Ondermijning) has raised concerns that while the auto industry plays an important role in the island’s economy, it is sometimes exploited by criminals. According to the center, this includes money laundering through car sales, illegal vehicle trade, and the use of garages as fronts for other illicit activities.
To counter these risks, the Action Center, in cooperation with several partners, carries out regular inspections at garage businesses. The aim is to strengthen the sector’s resilience and prevent it from being misused for criminal purposes.
During these visits, authorities focus on:
Compliance with licensing requirements and regulations
Identifying possible signs of illegal activity
Providing businesses with information on laws and obligations
The center also issued a public call for vigilance: “If you see suspicious situations in the auto sector, report it to the police or one of our partners. Together, we can ensure a safer Curaçao.”
