WILLEMSTAD - Minister of Traffic, Transport and Spatial Planning Charles Cooper has nominated Albert Martis as a candidate for the position of Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The election will take place in May.

The nomination is a historic moment, Cooper said, as it marks the first time a Caribbean island has been considered as a candidate for such a senior position in WMO. The nomination took place at WMO's headquarters in Geneva. In addition to Cooper, Secretary General of the Ministry Dwigno Puriel, Minister Plenipotentiary Carlson Manuel and Chief of Cabinet Tilly Pikerie also traveled to Switzerland.
In 2019, Martis had already been elected vice president of the WMO. Since 2010 he is permanent representative of Curaçao and Sint Maarten within the organization.
