Curaçao welcomes 23 newly licensed dentists in boost to local healthcare

WILLEMSTAD - In a significant move aimed at enhancing the island's healthcare system, the Minister of Health, Environment, and Nature (GMN), Javier Silvania, has officially sworn in 23 dentists, granting them licenses to practice in Curaçao. These professionals, who completed their studies in Colombia, Santo Domingo, and Costa Rica, represent a new wave of healthcare providers following recent policy changes that now allow dentists with dual-accredited diplomas to work on the island.

For decades, a 1930 law posed challenges for Latin American-trained dentists, as it only recognized Dutch diplomas. This limitation prevented many qualified professionals from practicing in Curaçao, creating barriers to expanding the local dental care workforce. However, with the implementation of new regulations, professionals trained in the region can now contribute to the island’s healthcare system.

“This marks the beginning of further improvements within our medical sector,” said Minister Silvania during the swearing-in ceremony. He emphasized that the arrival of these newly licensed dentists is expected to enhance the quality of dental care and contribute to the overall well-being of Curaçao’s population.

Government officials see this step as the opening of a new chapter in dental care for Curaçao, which will lead to broader access to medical services and improvements in public health. The newly licensed dentists are set to play a key role in addressing the island’s growing healthcare needs and improving the quality of life for its residents.

This move is part of a broader effort by the government to modernize and strengthen Curaçao’s medical services, ensuring that healthcare standards continue to rise and that the population has better access to essential care.
