WILLEMSTAD – The Unified Bowling Team of Special Olympics Curaçao returned home to a warm and emotional welcome this week after winning two gold medals at the 2026 Special Olympics North America (SONA) Unified Bowling Tournament in Reno, Nevada.
The team delivered an outstanding performance at the prestigious National Bowling Stadium, securing first place in the team competition and also claiming gold in the women’s unified doubles event. As the only representatives from the Caribbean, the Curaçao delegation outperformed top competitors from across North America.

The gold-winning team consisted of athletes Lucia Angelista and Joel Martina, alongside their Unified partners Tito Fernandes and Juderr Janga. Upon arrival at Curaçao International Airport, they were greeted by family members, supporters, and members of the community celebrating their achievement.
Under the guidance of coach Roland Rodrigues Bonito, the team demonstrated strong teamwork and precision throughout the three-day tournament, held from March 10 to 12.
Patricia Marques de Sousa, the newly appointed National Director of Special Olympics Curaçao, described the moment as a source of immense pride for the island. She noted that the team not only brought home medals but also showcased the strength and impact of the Unified Sports program on an international stage.
The tournament, organized annually in collaboration with the USBC Open Championships, provides athletes with a world-class competitive platform. Curaçao’s success marks one of the most significant international achievements for the program in recent years.
Special Olympics Curaçao expressed gratitude to sponsors, coaches, and supporters who made the team’s participation possible. The victory is expected to serve as inspiration for athletes, volunteers, and the wider community, highlighting the power of inclusion and determination in sports.
