WILLEMSTAD - Curaçao can expect to receive fuel with new specifications by the end of November. Following the approval of guidelines by the Council of Ministers on August 23, the new fuel is expected to be available at the pump by December.
During the transitional period, also known as the flush-out period, the new gasoline (Mogas) and diesel (LSD) will be blended with the existing stock of fuel. This process is anticipated to take approximately two months for gasoline and four months for diesel.
The updated fuels, featuring modified compositions, promise not only improved vehicle performance but also have a positive impact on the environment when compared to the highly polluting fuel currently available at gas stations.
Curt Belfor, Director of the regulatory agency Bureau Telecommunication & Post (BT&P), provided insights into the technical enhancements of the fuel. Notably, the sulfur content is significantly reduced, dropping from 1,000 ppm to 30 ppm for gasoline and from 500 to 15 ppm for diesel.
