WILLEMSTAD - Curaçao is set to establish a factory that will produce batteries for electric vehicles and other applications. The facility will be located in the Freezone. Curinde, the zone’s manager, and the American company SCMT Energy have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to this effect.

The MOU was signed in the presence of representatives from Curaçao’s Ministry of Economic Affairs, who expressed strong support for this innovative project within the Free Economic Zone managed by Curinde. The signatories were Mr. Samuel Kang, CEO of SCMT Energy, and Ms. Jacqueline Jansen, CEO of Curinde.
Mr. Kang stated, “Thanks to our relationships with the Caltech-incubated Sienza Energy and the strong support from the Curaçao government, we will produce world-class batteries in Curaçao.” Mr. Kang is a former senior executive at BYD and the Chief Operations Officer of Sienza Energy.
SCMT Energy is dedicated to delivering the most powerful and energy-dense rechargeable batteries in the world for electric vehicles, energy storage systems (ESS), and consumer electronics. Their commitment to environmental sustainability is demonstrated by their production of truly green lithium-ion batteries, significantly reducing production costs and environmental impact.
The establishment of the SCMT Energy battery factory in Curaçao will be a first for the Caribbean, aiming primarily to export to markets in Europe, the Caribbean, and Latin America, while also serving the local market.
