Curaçao to introduce mandatory microchipping for dogs in 2024

Local | By Correspondent October 2, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Starting next year, all dogs with owners in Curaçao will be required to have a microchip. This new measure is part of a series of legal regulations aimed at protecting the community from dangerous dog breeds, such as the pit bull terrier, and ensuring responsible pet ownership. The cost of a microchip will be approximately 50 guilders.

Under the new regulations, dogs must always remain on their owner’s property. If a dog leaves the premises, it must be accompanied by the owner, wear a muzzle, be on a leash, and have a microchip. The chip is crucial for identifying the owner in case of an incident and holding them accountable. Dogs without a chip will automatically be considered strays.

In addition to the microchip requirement, strict rules apply to pit bulls, which are still present in the community. These dogs must be sterilized or neutered to prevent further breeding. The ultimate goal is to reduce the population of this breed.
