Curacao to create legislation to issue fines based on license plate

Local | By Correspondent May 5, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - Traffic violators should be fined based on their license plate. In this way, violators can be punished in the future based on camera images along the road. A settlement proposal from the Justice Department will then arrive in the mailbox.

The current legislation does not include this so-called license plate liability, which means that the police have to physically stop a driver to issue a fine. The cameras that are currently set up along the road, such as on Helmin Wiels Boulevard, are not being used.

Responsible Minister Charles Cooper of Traffic and Transport says that a committee consisting of representatives from the ministries of VVRP and Justice are working on preparing the legislation to be completed and sent to parliament for consideration.

The legal change results in a settlement proposal going to the owner of the vehicle, regardless of who was behind the wheel at the time. Once a violation has been committed and this is recorded on camera, the owner of the vehicle will receive a settlement proposal at home.
