Curaçao to Commemorate 230th Anniversary of Tula’s Death

WILLEMSTAD – On Friday, October 3, Curaçao will pause to honor the 230th anniversary of the death of Tula, leader of the 1795 slave revolt. At the same time, the island will celebrate for the second year the official recognition of Tula as a national hero of Curaçao.

The commemoration, organized by the Asosiashon Promoshon Konsenshi Istóriko (APKI), will take place in Otrobanda and at Parke Lucha pa Libertat. The evening program begins at 6:30 p.m. with a mourning march, followed by a spiritual reflection, a Curaçao flag ceremony, and the laying of wreaths.

In addition to official speeches, the program will feature cultural contributions from local artists, poets, and dance groups, highlighting Curaçao’s rich heritage.

According to APKI, the combination of remembrance and celebration underscores the lasting significance of Tula’s fight for freedom and equality. This year’s event also serves as a prelude to the association’s 40th anniversary in 2026.
