WILLEMSTAD – Beginning in January 2026, learner drivers in Curaçao will be able to take their driving test in an automatic car. However, those who choose this option will not be permitted to drive manual transmission vehicles. Drivers who pass their test in a manual car, on the other hand, will be allowed to operate both manual and automatic vehicles.
The change was announced yesterday by Nyhaitha Vriend, head of the Department of Driving Licenses, during a government press conference.
Vriend explained the different license categories and exam requirements, noting that the majority of candidates still take their test in manual cars. While it has already been possible under certain conditions—mainly for people with disabilities—to take the exam in an automatic car, the new regulation will make this option available to everyone.
For individuals with disabilities, the current procedure requiring a referral from a general practitioner will remain in place.
The reform brings Curaçao in line with international practices and reflects the growing popularity of automatic vehicles on the island.
