Curaçao teacher's union and school board clash over communication methods

Local | By Correspondent December 9, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The Teachers' Union DOEN and the Roman Catholic Central School Board (RKCS) are locked in a legal dispute over communication protocols. The court heard arguments from both sides on Thursday.

DOEN insists on maintaining the option for in-person discussions, while the RKCS firmly rejects this approach, citing issues with union president Marbella Felipa. The school board claims that working with Felipa has become nearly impossible, hindering effective communication. As a result, RKCS decided to limit interactions to written correspondence, even on individual labor issues involving DOEN members. This decision prompted DOEN to file a lawsuit.

During the hearing, RKCS’s attorney argued that in-person meetings with Felipa are unfeasible. Meanwhile, DOEN contended that written communication is insufficient for addressing critical matters that require direct interaction.

A ruling in the case is expected on December 20.
