Curaçao Takes Major Step Toward Smart and Sustainable Public Transportation

WILLEMSTAD – The government of Curaçao is taking a crucial step in its mission to bring the island a modern and efficient public transportation system. The vision for the future is clear: smart, sustainable, and user-friendly mobility for all.

This new phase includes the introduction of intelligent electric buses, offering Wi-Fi access both on board and at bus stops, real-time updates, digital route planning, and cashless payment options. The initiative aims to make daily commuting easier, safer, and better for the environment, aligning with the global shift toward cleaner and more connected urban transport.

IUH to Lead Transition

As of early August, the Integrated Utility Holding (IUH) will take over the interim management of ABC Busbedrijf, which will be responsible for implementing this next-generation transit system. The government selected IUH based on its expertise in electricity, internet services, crisis management, and organizational transformation.

Over the next 12 months, IUH is tasked with developing a comprehensive modernization plan to guide Curaçao toward this new model of public transportation. The final plan must aim for improved service quality and lower transportation costs for users.

Leadership and Strategic Vision

To lead this transformation, IUH has appointed Mr. Raycelli Seferina as interim director of ABC Busbedrijf. Seferina is an experienced executive with a strong background in both technical operations and financial management, making him well-suited for the role.

According to the government, public transportation is subsidized worldwide, and Curaçao is no exception. However, once service quality improves and ridership increases, the government expects that its financial support for public transport will gradually decrease. Any remaining subsidies will be directed specifically to ensure quality service delivery.

A Commitment to Workers and the Public

The government has also emphasized that the well-being of both passengers and employees of ABC Busbedrijf is a top priority. The goal is to create a fair and professional working environment where employees can grow, the company can thrive, and Curaçao as a whole can move forward.

This ambitious plan marks the beginning of a new era for public transportation on the island—one that is smarter, greener, and more accessible for all.
