Curaçao recognizes Surinamese court rulings

Local | By Correspondent December 5, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The agreement between the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Suriname regarding the mutual recognition and enforcement of judicial decisions and authentic instruments in civil matters has officially come into effect in Curaçao as of today. Signed in The Hague on August 27, 1976, the treaty establishes a framework for legal cooperation between the two nations.

With this implementation, civil rulings and official documents from Suriname will now be recognized and enforced in Curaçao, and vice versa. This includes judgments on matters such as alimony, child custody, and civil damage claims, which will hold legal validity in both jurisdictions.

The agreement aims to streamline legal processes between Curaçao and Suriname, offering better protection for citizens involved in cross-border civil matters.
