Curaçao Police Temporarily Halt Vehicle Seizures Due to Full Impound Lots

WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao Police Force (KPC) is facing a serious logistical issue: all impound lots for seized vehicles are at full capacity, making it temporarily impossible to confiscate additional cars. The problem came to light over the weekend and has immediate implications for traffic enforcement.

As a result, police officers are currently unable to seize vehicles that fail to meet traffic safety regulations. This includes cars with technical defects or invalid documentation, which under normal circumstances would be taken off the road.

An internal police memo addressed the issue directly: “If a vehicle is stopped but cannot be transported to the impound lot, it cannot be seized—even if the paperwork is not in order.”

The situation poses a challenge for law enforcement, particularly as Curaçao continues to deal with traffic safety concerns. Authorities have not yet indicated when space in the storage facilities will become available or what interim measures might be taken.
