Local | By Correspondent January 2, 2025

WILLEMSTADCuraçao welcomed 2025 with a peaceful start, according to statements from the police to Curacao.nu on New Year’s Day.

Brionplein Gatherings

As is tradition, large crowds gathered at Brionplein and the Emmabrug to ring in the New Year. While the celebrations were lively, there were a few scuffles among youths. Police intervened to separate the individuals involved. At 1:40 a.m., one person was arrested at Brionplein. The man, intoxicated, threatened a police officer and was detained to sober up in custody. He was released after being presented to the Public Prosecutor.

House Fire in Soto / Santa Martha

A house in the Soto / Santa Martha area was destroyed by a fire, leaving two people injured, including an 11-year-old boy. The police were alerted at 3:00 a.m. and are investigating the incident. Witnesses reported hearing an explosion in one of the rooms. Premier Gilmar “Pik” Pisas stated on Facebook that a Molotov cocktail might have been thrown into the house, although the police have not yet confirmed this claim.

First and Last Accident of the Year

An accident occurred around midnight on the Don Martina Boulevard, resulting in one injury that required transport to the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC). The parties involved have the dubious distinction of being part of the last traffic accident of 2024 or the first of 2025.

Police Presence and Gratitude

Police were stationed at strategic locations, including Punda, Brionplein, Caracasbaai, Salinja, and the Fort Nassau hilltop. They were supported by the Volunteer Corps Curaçao (VKC) and the Curaçao Militia (Curmil).

The police expressed gratitude for the community’s responsible behavior during the celebrations. According to their assessment, the New Year’s festivities demonstrated the island’s ability to adhere to rules and maintain order.
