Curaçao Police Record 11,000 Traffic Accidents Annually, Launch “Kita Tur” Campaign to Enhance Road Safety

WILLEMSTADThe police in Curaçao record approximately 11,000 traffic accidents each year, many involving personal injuries and material damage. A significant number of vehicles are also being driven on the island without valid documentation. This was revealed by Police Chief Jules Ilario during a press conference yesterday, where the “Kita Tur” road safety campaign was officially launched.

The goal of the project is to improve traffic safety across the island. Many accidents occur where victims are left stranded because the vehicles involved lack valid documents, such as inspection certificates, insurance, or paid road taxes.

Ilario emphasized that over recent years, many drivers have experienced situations where, after being involved in accidents, the at-fault party was uninsured. “This leaves victims facing significant costs,” he explained. To address this, the police will increase the frequency of traffic checks, which will continue even after the campaign ends. During these checks, drivers without a valid inspection certificate or insurance will receive a ticket. If any vehicle documentation is not in order—such as the lack of an inspection certificate, insurance, or paid road tax—the police will remove the vehicle from the road.

This new initiative is part of the government's broader efforts to improve road safety and reduce traffic-related incidents on the island.
