Curaçao Police Enforce Zero Tolerance During Carnival Parades

Local | By Correspondent February 24, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – The Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Police are enforcing strict measures against public disturbances and traffic violations during this year’s carnival celebrations. A zero-tolerance policy will be in effect for all carnival parades, requiring all individuals aged twelve and older to carry valid identification at all times. The police will also conduct preventive searches under the Firearms Ordinance.

In addition to maintaining public order, the police are focusing on traffic safety. Drivers and passengers of two-wheeled vehicles, such as motorcycles and scooters, are required to wear an approved helmet. Illegal driving behaviors, including "feveren" (reckless riding), "hopping" (stunt riding), and drifting, will not be tolerated. Any vehicles involved in such offenses will be immediately confiscated, and drivers will be arrested.

Law enforcement will also strictly enforce criminal offenses under the Criminal Code, such as resisting arrest, insulting a public officer, minor assault, and public intoxication. Failing to present identification upon request or disobeying a police order can also result in fines. Offenders will be given the option to settle their fines immediately, with a 15% discount for direct payment.

Those who choose to contest their case in court risk higher fines, possible imprisonment, and a criminal record. Fine rates for criminal offenses remain the same as last year.
