WILLEMSTAD - This year, the police in Curaçao have arrested 65 suspects for car theft, according to Minister Shalton Hato. In the previous year, a total of 66 suspects were apprehended, but this figure also included cases of home and business burglaries.
The minister mentioned that, at the beginning of the year, he modified the strategic annual plan, considering car theft as a high-impact crime.
The number of suspects apprehended remains relatively low compared to the number of reported cases. In 2021, there were 158 reported incidents, and the total figure for 2023 is yet to be disclosed.
Car theft encompasses not only the act of stealing a vehicle but also incidents where windows are smashed, or the vehicle is damaged to pilfer belongings of the owner or others.
