Curaçao Plans Glass Recycling Factory to Turn Waste Bottles Into Local Construction Materials by 2027

Local, | By Correspondent November 4, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao is preparing to establish a glass recycling factory that will transform discarded glass bottles into reusable raw materials for local industries, reducing the need for imported river sand while creating new employment opportunities.

Fundashon Resiklá Glas recently presented its plans to Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas, outlining an initiative aimed at giving glass waste a new economic purpose on the island.

The foundation intends to begin collecting glass during the third quarter of 2027, with businesses playing a central role in the collection process.

Unlike recycling initiatives that depend on exporting waste materials for processing abroad, the project is designed to keep the entire recycling process on Curaçao.

Collected glass will be processed locally into a clean alternative to imported river sand, creating a material that can be used in various sectors of the island's economy.

Hotels, Restaurants and Beach Clubs to Participate

To collect as much glass as possible, Fundashon Resiklá Glas plans to focus initially on businesses that regularly dispose of large quantities of glass bottles.

Special collection containers will be installed at hotels, restaurants, neighborhood shops known locally as toko's, and beach clubs.

These establishments generate considerable amounts of glass waste through the sale and consumption of bottled beverages.

By establishing dedicated collection points at these locations, the foundation hopes to create an organized system that allows glass to be separated from other waste before disposal.

Collection services will operate according to fixed schedules, while businesses will also be able to request additional pickups when necessary.

The approach is intended to make participation convenient for businesses while ensuring a consistent supply of recyclable glass for the planned processing facility.

Collection Points Also Planned for Residents

Although the business community will be the initial focus, the project will also allow individual residents to participate.

Fundashon Resiklá Glas plans to establish central glass collection points at various locations across Curaçao.

Residents will be able to bring their used glass bottles to these designated facilities rather than disposing of them with ordinary household waste.

The initiative aims to make glass recycling more accessible and encourage greater public participation in waste separation.

Details about the exact locations of the collection points and the procedures residents will need to follow have not yet been announced.

Recycled Glass to Replace Imported River Sand

One of the most significant aspects of the project is the foundation's plan to process collected glass entirely on Curaçao.

Instead of shipping discarded bottles overseas, the glass will be transformed into a clean raw material that can serve as an alternative to imported river sand.

The recycled material could be used in several local industries, depending on their technical requirements and the applications for which the processed glass is suitable.

By creating a locally produced alternative to an imported material, the initiative could reduce dependence on overseas suppliers while giving discarded glass a second life.

The project also represents an opportunity to develop a more circular economy, in which waste materials are recovered, processed, and reused locally rather than discarded.

New Employment Opportunities

In addition to its environmental objectives, the planned recycling factory is expected to create employment opportunities on Curaçao.

The collection, transportation, sorting, and processing of glass will require workers and supporting services.

The initiative could also generate business opportunities for companies involved in logistics, waste management, equipment maintenance, and the use of recycled materials.

The foundation has not yet disclosed the anticipated number of jobs, the total investment required, or the planned production capacity of the factory.

Collection Scheduled to Begin in 2027

Fundashon Resiklá Glas is targeting the third quarter of 2027 to begin collecting glass.

The presentation to Prime Minister Pisas marks a step in communicating the foundation's plans to the government as preparations continue.

Further details about the construction of the processing facility, financing arrangements, and the timetable for beginning production have not yet been made public.

If successfully implemented, the initiative would provide Curaçao with a local system for recovering glass waste and converting it into useful raw materials.

The project could also help address two challenges facing the island: the management of discarded materials and dependence on imported construction-related resources.

For Fundashon Resiklá Glas, the objective is to demonstrate that discarded glass bottles do not have to remain waste but can instead become a valuable resource for Curaçao's economy.
