WILLEMSTAD - The Union of Pensioners of Curaçao (Unie di Gepensioneerden) is calling on all retirees to take to the streets today to demand the immediate payment of the delayed AOV (Old Age Pension) indexation.
According to the union, the government has yet to implement the legally mandated adjustment to pension payments, even as the island’s rising cost of living continues to place a heavy burden on retirees.
The demonstration will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Parasasa parking area, after which participants will march to the World Trade Center, where they will deliver a formal letter to the Minister of Social Development, Labor, and Welfare (SOAW).
In the letter, the organization urges the government to “pay the overdue indexation as soon as possible,” citing legislation that requires AOV benefits to be adjusted in line with price inflation.
Union president Oswin Martina said it is time for pensioners to stand up for their rights:
“The law is the law — it must be enforced,” Martina stated, expressing hope for a strong turnout.
The demonstration reflects growing frustration among retirees, who argue that Curaçao’s seniors — many of whom rely solely on AOV payments — have been left behind amid persistent inflation and delayed government action.
