Curaçao Parliament requests technical briefing on government's duty of care

Local | By Correspondent December 13, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Several factions in the Curaçao Parliament have formally requested a technical briefing to discuss the government’s duty of care in light of an opinion piece by economist Rob van den Berg. The article was featured in the 2023 annual report of the Curaçao Council of Advice (RvA).

Parliament members aim to invite Van den Berg and other experts to provide insights into the RvA's recommendations and the government’s role in supporting local businesses. The briefing seeks to deepen understanding of the government’s responsibilities and limitations in assisting companies facing financial difficulties.

Independent MP Zita Jesus-Leito spearheaded the initiative, with support from factions of the MFK, PAR, KEM, and fellow independent MP Corrine Djaoen-Genaro. “The opinion piece discusses criteria for government support to businesses, a pertinent topic given the island's social and economic challenges,” the factions stated.

The technical briefing will be held during a session of the Central Committee of Parliament, where MPs will receive direct information from experts and stakeholders.

This session is expected to clarify critical aspects of government aid policies, aiming to strengthen Curaçao's approach to economic and social challenges.
