WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao Parliament held discussions with Minister of Social Development, Labor and Welfare Charetti America-Francisca on Thursday, September 10, concerning labor abuse, with Members of Parliament questioning the minister about the issue during a Central Committee meeting.
Acting President of Parliament Rigoletto Thode opened the first round of discussions, giving MPs an opportunity to present their positions and submit questions to America-Francisca.
The meeting was specifically convened to discuss “labor abuse,” although the parliamentary statement did not provide details about individual cases or the specific forms of workplace abuse raised by MPs.
At the end of the first round, America-Francisca requested four hours to prepare and formulate responses to the questions submitted by parliamentarians. Thode initially announced that consideration of the agenda item would be suspended until 4:30 p.m.
When the Central Committee resumed at 2:00 p.m. to consider its second agenda item, however, Thode announced that the discussion on labor abuse would remain suspended until further notice. The decision was intended to give the minister sufficient time to prepare her answers.
This means the parliamentary debate has not yet been concluded, and America-Francisca is expected to return to Parliament to respond to the questions raised during the first round.
The Central Committee subsequently considered a proposal for a parliamentary delegation to participate in the ParlAmericas event “Public Security in the Americas and the Caribbean: Parliamentary Responses to Organized Crime and Violence.”
The conference is scheduled to take place from October 21 through 23 in Valparaíso, Chile. Parliament approved the proposed trip.
Thode then suspended the Central Committee meeting until further notice.
