WILLEMSTAD – The athletics track at Ergilio Hato Stadium in Curaçao will soon bear the name of Churandy Martina, the island’s most celebrated sprinter. This decision honors Martina’s outstanding achievements in international athletics and his legacy as an inspiration for future generations of Curaçaoan athletes.
A Storied Olympic Career
Churandy Martina competed in five Olympic Games, representing both the Netherlands Antilles (2004 and 2008) and later the Netherlands (2012, 2016, and 2021). During the 2012 London Olympics, he reached the finals in the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay, while in Rio de Janeiro 2016, he made the 200m final.
National and International Records
Martina holds multiple Dutch national records, including the 60m, 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay. Additionally, he remains the record holder for all sprint events previously set under the now-dissolved Netherlands Antilles.
Naming the stadium’s athletics track after Churandy Martina is a tribute to his dedication, perseverance, and excellence in the sport, ensuring his legacy continues to inspire young athletes in Curaçao and beyond.
