Curaçao Must Nominate New Governor, Says Dutch State Secretary Szabó

WILLEMSTAD Curaçao is expected to submit a proposal for the appointment of a new governor, Dutch State Secretary for Kingdom Relations Zsolt Szabó (PVV) stated following the latest meeting of the Kingdom Council of Ministers.

While current Acting Governor Michèle Russel-Capriles will remain in office for the time being, a formal successor must soon be appointed to replace outgoing Governor Lucille George-Wout. George-Wout, who has served since 2013, will conclude her second six-year term in November 2025.

"The appointment process has been initiated, and it is now up to Curaçao to nominate a suitable candidate," Szabó said in an official statement.

The Governor represents the Dutch Head of State in Curaçao and plays a key role in upholding constitutional order and overseeing the functioning of the local government. The nomination process typically involves close consultation between the Curaçao government and the Kingdom government in The Hague.
