Curaçao monuments to receive QR codes

Local | By Press release December 5, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - Curaçao will be placing QR codes on monuments in the city. During the opening day of the Invest in Willemstad event, the first QR code was unveiled on the façade of the Villa Maria building, managed by the Fundashon Monumentenzorg.

Representatives from N.V. Stadsherstel and Kura Hulanda Village also received a symbolic plate with a QR code. Together with Fundashon Monumentenzorg and the Ministry of VVRP, they are part of a pilot project. In the same way, Fort Amsterdam and government buildings on Wilhelmina Square will also be equipped with QR codes.

These QR codes will lead interested individuals to information and the official description of the monument on the website www.curacaomonuments.org. The goal of this project is to make information about the architectural heritage of Willemstad accessible to interested parties in real-time.

Passersby, ranging from students, shoppers to tourists, can scan the QR code for more details about the respective building. They will then receive a brief history of the building and the official monument description, along with additional photos.

Registered

In the center of Willemstad, there are 734 registered monuments. For each of these buildings, the official monument description is currently available on the website.

This is a rather technical text that describes the construction aspects of the building.

At the beginning of this project, additional cultural and historical information about the building has been added to the website for 75 monuments, including photos and documents where possible.

These 75 selected monuments are located in the Stegengebied and Kura Hulanda areas in Otrobanda, Scharloo Abou / Fleur de Marie, and around Fortplein and Wilhelminaplein in Punda.

After the pilot phase, more monumental buildings in Willemstad will be provided with a QR code plate and additional information on the website.
