Curaçao monitoring Monkeypox developments closely, no cases reported

Local | By Correspondent August 30, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The Infectious Disease Control Department of Curaçao is closely monitoring the developments surrounding Monkeypox (Mpox) on the island. However, no cases of the virus have been detected locally, according to Irálice Jansen, head of the department. Jansen emphasized that the situation is under continuous surveillance.

Monkeypox is a virus that primarily affects regions in Africa, but recent cases have been reported in countries such as Sweden and Pakistan. The virus generally causes mild symptoms, including fever, headaches, muscle pain, chills, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck and groin areas.

Although the symptoms are usually mild, certain groups, such as children, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems, are considered at higher risk. The health authorities are remaining vigilant to ensure the virus does not pose a threat to public health on the island.
