Curaçao Meteorological Service warns of extreme heat

Local | By Correspondent August 2, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - The weather service of Curaçao has issued a warning for extreme heat. According to the meteorological service, the island is entering the time of year when temperatures become hotter than usual, specifically in the months of August, September, and October.

A combination of high temperatures and high humidity, occasional weaker winds than normal, can lead to discomfort. The maximum temperatures in the coming months can range from 34°C to 36°C. Humidity levels of 85% to 90% or more contribute to a heat index of approximately 43°C to 46°C every day.

The heat and high humidity do not decrease significantly during the night, with temperatures only dropping to a minimum of 28°C to 29°C. This increases the risk for people who cannot find a suitable place to cool down.

Extreme heat is the number one weather-related killer, according to the meteorological service. People need to be prepared for the dangers that extreme heat can cause. Small children, the elderly, and people with heart conditions are most vulnerable. Limit outdoor activities to the early morning or when the sun sets. If you have air conditioning, use it, or at least open the windows to let air circulate.

A warning for extreme heat means that a period of high temperatures is expected. The combination of high temperatures and humidity can create a situation where illnesses caused by prolonged exposure to high temperatures can occur. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room. Stay out of the sun and wear light-colored clothing, preferably white.
