Curaçao Medical Center Sounds Alarm Over Budget Overruns for SVB Patients

WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) has raised serious concerns over a significant budget overrun related to healthcare provided to patients insured through the SVB (Social Insurance Bank). According to an internal letter from the hospital’s Board of Directors, the increasing demand for care from SVB patients is putting severe financial pressure on the institution, while the number of privately insured patients and referrals from sister islands remains below expectations.

The hospital warns that this imbalance is jeopardizing both the continuity and quality of care. In response, the CMC is asking its medical departments to better distribute care for SVB patients and to reserve 15 percent of their capacity for other patient groups, including those with private insurance and from neighboring islands.

According to the hospital, regional cooperation and a financially sustainable approach to healthcare are critical, especially during a time marked by staff shortages and increasing regulatory pressure.

The appeal reflects broader concerns within the healthcare system about maintaining equitable and high-quality care amidst constrained budgets and growing demand.
