Curaçao Medical Center modernizes IT infrastructure with Nutanix Cloud Platform

WILLEMSTAD - The Curaçao Medical Center (CMC), a state-of-the-art healthcare facility built to Dutch medical standards and adapted for the Caribbean context, has successfully modernized its IT infrastructure with the implementation of Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure and Nutanix Cloud Manager.

The hospital, which has 300 beds and serves as the island’s main provider of specialized and accessible healthcare, faced the challenge of replacing its aging VMware-based hardware environment.

Transitioning to a scalable and reliable digital foundation

“Our hardware and VMware-based setup had reached the end of its lifecycle,” said Elmer Kwidama, CMC’s IT Manager. “We were looking for a powerful, reliable, and scalable solution that was also easy to manage and cost-effective.”

With more than 3,500 connected devices and an IT department divided into multiple clusters — ranging from functional management to business intelligence — CMC required a modern, flexible, and efficient platform to support its expanding digital operations and ensure seamless patient care.

Centralized management and secure storage

By choosing Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure as its foundation, CMC gained a centralized, easy-to-manage environment for all systems. The integration of Nutanix Unified Storage simplified storage management, ensuring secure backups and continuous operations without the complexity of maintaining multiple storage solutions.

“Nutanix offers a complete, all-in-one solution that fits perfectly with the needs of a modern digital healthcare environment,” Kwidama noted. “It gives us both the performance and efficiency we need, while maintaining flexibility and cost control.”

Efficiency brings major cost savings

With Nutanix’s lifecycle management tools and single-pane-of-glass administration, CMC’s IT team can now perform maintenance more quickly and intuitively. This efficiency has led to significant cost savings, allowing staff to focus more on innovation rather than system upkeep.

“We now have one management interface that integrates all systems, saving us a great deal of time and enabling us to respond faster to IT needs,” Kwidama said. “This gives us both flexibility and better control over our IT budget — something crucial in a hospital environment with limited resources.”

Smooth transition and zero downtime

The migration to Nutanix was completed without any network outages. The new platform enables CMC to respond more effectively to emergencies, thanks to its self-healing capabilities and zero-downtime performance.

“The system is fully self-recovering, and we haven’t experienced any downtime — not even during updates,” Kwidama confirmed.

Stability and control with on-premises operations

While CMC is exploring which applications may eventually migrate to the cloud, the hospital has decided to continue optimizing its on-premises infrastructure for now. Cost management remains a key priority to maintain high-quality care without exceeding budgetary limits.

“Although the cloud is certainly an option for the future,” Kwidama concluded, “we will continue working with Nutanix on-premises for the time being, because it provides the stability and control we need.”

The upgrade marks a significant milestone in CMC’s ongoing digital transformation, reinforcing its mission to deliver reliable, efficient, and technology-driven healthcare to the people of Curaçao.
