Curaçao Kicks Off Gold Cup Campaign with 0-0 Draw Against El Salvador

SAN JOSE – The Curaçao national football team began its Gold Cup journey with a goalless draw against El Salvador in their opening Group B match, held at the Earthquakes Stadium in San Jose, California.

Under the leadership of head coach Dick Advocaat, Curaçao created early chances, with Leandro Bacuna of FC Groningen testing the Salvadoran defense. Goalkeeper Eloy Room was called into action early on to stop a dangerous counterattack from El Salvador. Curaçao continued to push forward, with their best opportunity falling to Livano Comenencia, who missed the target after a strong cross from former PSV striker Jürgen Locadia.

Curaçao's squad is composed entirely of players who either currently play in the Dutch professional leagues or have previously done so. The team aims to repeat its 2019 success, when it reached the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Up next for Curaçao is a crucial clash against Canada, who began their campaign with a dominant 6-0 victory over Honduras. That match will take place this weekend. Canada previously won the Gold Cup in 2000.

Elsewhere in the tournament, Suriname also made its Group A debut. Coached by Stanley Menzo, the team lost a thrilling 3-4 match against Costa Rica. Suriname is set to face Mexico and the Dominican Republic in the coming days.
