Local | By Press release July 29, 2024

SAINT GEORGE’S - On Sunday, Curaçao officially joined the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) by entering into an associate membership. CARICOM promotes economic integration and cooperation within the Caribbean region.

Curaçao's accession took place during a ceremony at the opening of a summit in Grenada, attended by the organization's leaders. The summit is addressing, among other issues, the growing impacts of climate change.

CARICOM consists of fifteen member countries, including Suriname, Jamaica, Haiti, and Guyana, and with Curaçao's addition, six countries hold associate membership status. According to the organization, all CARICOM countries are classified as developing nations.

“They are all relatively small in terms of population and size and diverse in terms of geography and population, culture, and levels of economic and social development,” stated the Caribbean Community's website.
