Curaçao increasingly dependent on unplanned Dutch funding

| By Correspondent February 25, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao’s public finances are becoming more reliant on ad hoc funding from the Netherlands, the government acknowledges in its latest execution report. Several expenditures in 2025 were covered by Dutch contributions that were not originally included in the national budget.

These include funding for crime prevention programs, education initiatives, youth support projects and salary corrections for Coast Guard and Royal Navy personnel. While the funds helped avoid budget overruns, the report notes that this practice complicates financial planning and transparency.

The Ministry of Finance stresses that structural solutions are needed to reduce dependence on incidental external support and to strengthen Curaçao’s financial autonomy within the Kingdom.
