WILLEMSTAD - The Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) has eighty dialysis chairs for a catchment area of 150,000 people. According to CMC director Gilbert Martina, that's quite a lot. For comparison: the city of Rotterdam, with 800,000 residents, has only fourteen available dialysis chairs.
The 48 dialysis chairs in the CMC can accommodate 96 patients per day. In addition to the CMC, there's also a dialysis center with 32 chairs.
Curaçao has a relatively high number of dialysis chairs due to various factors, including the high prevalence of kidney diseases and chronic conditions that can lead to kidney failure, the aging population, and the limited availability of kidney transplants.
CMC
Currently, the CMC hospital has 300 rooms, 72 outpatient spaces, seven operating rooms, and facilities for patients undergoing chemotherapy.
There is a team of nurses on staff as well as specialists in various fields.
The management is currently adjusting the compensation structure for specialists internally, in line with the law that has set a maximum of 386,000 guilders per year.
According to Martina's presentation, the CMC offers a range of specialties, ranging from care for premature babies, chemotherapy, to complex neurosurgery and cardiology.
