Curaçao government to appeal same-sex marriage ruling

WILLEMSTAD - The government of Curaçao will appeal against the court's ruling on the ban on same-sex marriage. The judge ruled in September that the ban on same-sex marriage is contrary to the constitution.

Immediately after the ruling last year, Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas indicated that he would appeal against the ruling, but his answer has only now been sent to parliament. According to the Prime Minister, gay couples in Curaçao can easily arrange their legal and financial affairs through, among other things, a cohabitation contract and a will.

The human rights organization 'Human Rights Caribbean' brought the case against the government last year. The judge then ruled that the ban on same-sex marriage is "unlawful discrimination" and that it violates the principle of equality and the prohibition of discrimination.

It is not yet known when the appeal will be heard.
