WILLEMSTAD - The Ministry of Health, Environment, and Nature (GMN) is implementing measures to address the mosquito problem at Zakitó Lagoon. Near Koredor, at Playa Parasasa, seawater is being pumped into the lagoon to increase salinity levels, preventing mosquitoes from laying eggs in the water.
According to the ministry, the lagoon was originally filled with saltwater, but rainfall has led to freshwater inflow from surrounding areas, reducing salinity and creating an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes.
“To resolve this issue, water is being actively circulated. A large pump is being used to introduce fresh seawater into the lagoon,” stated GMN. The ministry anticipates this measure will effectively eliminate conditions conducive to mosquito breeding.
The GMN also emphasized that the Zakitó Lagoon is a significant contributor to the mosquito infestation in the area.
