Curaçao Government Increases Vacation Allowance for Civil Servants

Local | By Correspondent March 17, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao government has announced an increase in vacation pay for civil servants from six to nearly eight percent, bringing the total amount closer to a full month's salary. The decision was made public by Minister of Finance Javier Silvania via social media.

Unions Celebrate Long-Awaited Victory

According to George Hernandez, chairman of the ABVO union, labor unions have been fighting for over 30 years to increase the vacation allowance, which had remained fixed at six percent during that time. Despite not being officially informed in advance, Hernandez expressed satisfaction with the decision, which comes just before the elections.

"We are happy with this decision. It’s not just a bonus for civil servants; it also helps put more money into the local economy," said Hernandez.

Amado Vilchez, chairman of the SAP union, stated that the increase was originally proposed by his union and later adopted by the CCvV (Curaçao's trade union consultation platform). The issue was previously brought to the political agenda by former minister Ornelio Martina, but after his departure, progress stalled.

Government Stands by Its Promise

Minister Silvania emphasized the fulfillment of the government’s commitment in his announcement, stating: “Promised and delivered.” The higher vacation allowance effectively provides civil servants with nearly an extra month’s salary when they receive their vacation pay.

Mixed Reactions from Unions Over Announcement Timing

Within the CCvV, some frustration arose as they learned about the decision via social media while they were in the middle of a meeting. However, union leaders acknowledged that pre-election policy changes are common in Curaçao.

Despite the timing, satisfaction outweighs frustration, as labor unions see this as a long-awaited achievement for civil servants and the broader economy.
