Local | By Press release March 7, 2025

WILLEMSTADOn Thursday, March 6, the Government of Curaçao, represented by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development, Charles Cooper, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federation Fekoskan. This important partnership aims to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and marks a significant milestone in the island’s efforts toward socio-economic development and sustainability. Ms. Zita Jesus-Leito, responsible for the Ministry of Economic Development and a key supporter of this achievement, was also present.

Fekoskan, a federation representing the interests of five savings and credit cooperatives with over 29,000 members, is dedicated to financial inclusion and economic empowerment within the community. Through this collaboration, the government and Fekoskan will jointly develop projects and initiatives contributing to the SDGs, with a focus on eradicating poverty, financial education, sustainable energy, food security, and social inclusion.

As Minister Charles Cooper stated, "This partnership highlights Curaçao's commitment to sustainable growth and inclusive economic development. Collaborating with Fekoskan will strengthen the impact of our SDG strategy and directly contribute to a more resilient and sustainable future for our community."

Minister Cooper also emphasized the importance of cooperatives, both for their members and families and for Curaçao as a whole.

An important action highlighted by Minister Cooper is the initiative to encourage people with agricultural land to actively use it for planting, contributing to the goal of food security for the island.

Earlrich Lourens, President of Fekoskan, remarked, "This agreement is historic, especially in a year declared by the United Nations as the International Year of Cooperativism, with the theme 'Cooperatives Build a Better World,' which underscores the essential role cooperatives play in achieving the SDGs."

The MoU lays the foundation for collaborative efforts such as awareness campaigns, training programs, and financing opportunities for sustainable projects. This initiative aligns with the national SDG agenda and contributes to an inclusive and sustainable future for Curaçao.
