Curaçao focuses on zero-emission trucks and buses

Local | By Correspondent November 25, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - By 2040, all new trucks and buses in Curaçao must be zero-emission. Curaçao has joined 37 other countries in the Global Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for heavy-duty transport. This international initiative, led by the Netherlands, aims to reduce CO₂ and nitrogen emissions from heavy vehicles worldwide.

Heavy-duty transport, such as trucks and buses, accounts for about a third of global fuel consumption and seventy percent of nitrogen emissions in road traffic. With the requirement that all new vehicles be emission-free starting in 2040, the 38 countries are taking an important step toward a cleaner environment and more sustainable transport.

This ambition brings opportunities for investments in sustainable technology and infrastructure. Local businesses can benefit from cleaner vehicles, lower fuel costs, and improved air quality. By joining the Global MOU, Curaçao aligns itself with a global movement supported by over 200 companies and organizations, including major names such as Maersk and Heineken.

Dutch Secretary of State Chris Jansen emphasizes, “This expansion shows that sustainable mobility is not only necessary but also achievable. It offers benefits for both the environment and the local economy.”
