Curaçao Facing Egg Shortage Amid Rising Demand and Production Delays

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao is currently experiencing a shortage of eggs due to a sudden surge in demand, while local producer Egg Farm Moderno struggles to scale up its daily output.

According to José Dovale, director of Egg Farm Moderno, the company’s current production capacity of around 70,000 eggs per day falls short of the 80,000 to 85,000 eggs needed to meet daily demand on the island.

Dovale says the shortage has been an issue for over a year, largely due to delays in obtaining necessary permits and the slow construction of new chicken coops. At the same time, Curaçao's growing population and increasing tourism have further intensified the demand for eggs.

Despite ongoing expansion efforts, Dovale warned that the situation is unlikely to improve in the coming months.

Egg Farm Moderno is Curaçao’s main local supplier and has been in operation for over four decades. The current shortage has prompted concern among retailers and consumers, as the island relies heavily on consistent local production to meet basic food needs.
