Curaçao expands meat imports

Local | By Correspondent August 5, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Import companies in Curaçao are now permitted to import both boneless and bone-in beef and pork from Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Additionally, the import of sheep and goat meat from Argentina is now allowed. This change, which is set to take effect this month according to the Official Gazette, aims to address the scarcity of meat in Colombia that has led to rising prices.

By allowing meat imports from these four South American countries, Curaçao hopes to stabilize market prices. Import companies will now have more options and can select the best quality meat at the best prices.

The slaughterhouses and inspection companies in these countries must be approved by the USDA and DG Santé, the primary organizations responsible for food export and import inspections to the U.S. and the European Union. This ensures that no infectious livestock diseases enter the country.
