Curaçao Environmental Association Files Complaint Against Dutch Politician Geert Wilders Over Alleged Hate-Inciting Tweet

WILLEMSTAD On behalf of the Curaçao-based environmental association Hende-i-Medio-Ambiente (HiMA), a formal complaint has been filed against Dutch politician Geert Wilders. The complaint concerns a tweet posted by Wilders on August 4 on social media platform X, featuring an AI-edited image of two half-faces.

On the left side of the image is a young blonde woman with the letters “PVV” underneath; on the right, an older, stern-looking woman wearing a headscarf, labeled “PvdA.” Wilders captioned the image: “The choice is yours on 29/10.”

According to HiMA chairperson Yvonne Olf, the tweet constitutes group insult and incites hatred, agitation, and hostility, while also unnecessarily creating social unrest.

“I looked at the tweet with disgust and felt it was my duty — to myself and to the many friends I have with a Muslim background — to file a complaint,” Olf said.

The complaint was filed with discriminatie.nl, the national Dutch reporting center for discrimination. More than 12,500 complaints have now been submitted regarding Wilders’ post, with numerous civil society organizations joining the action.

Olf has also filed a personal complaint on behalf of HiMA, citing previous incidents involving Wilders. In 2020, he was convicted of group insult over his “fewer Moroccans” remark. In 2008, Olf herself filed a complaint after Wilders’ comments about Islam and Muslims, in which he described the religion as “evil,” “violent,” and “an intolerant and fascist ideology.” That case did not result in a conviction.

“At that time, I was assisted by attorney Henri Sarolea in Amsterdam,” Olf noted. “I am pleased that discriminatie.nl will now proceed with filing an official complaint.”
