Curaçao develops buffer zone between Wechi neighborhood and Malpais landfill

Local | By Correspondent November 6, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - After nearly a decade of intensive collaboration, the Curaçao government and associated organizations have taken a significant step in developing the 134-hectare Wechi area. Minister Charles Cooper of Traffic, Transport, and Urban Planning (VVRP), the Foundation Fundashon Kas Popular (FKP), and former Health, Environment, and Nature Minister Dorothy Pietersz-Janga have reached an agreement to create a green buffer zone between the Malpais landfill and the new housing project in Wechi.

The buffer zone, which will be a 20-meter-wide natural barrier along the border of Wechi and Malpais, consists of a planted hillside. It aims to provide both a physical and visual separation, enhancing the view for residents. This project is part of a long-term plan that also includes the gradual closure of the landfill.

Under the agreement with waste management company Selikor, measures will be taken to minimize nuisance-causing activities near the buffer zone. On the Wechi side, a walking and biking path will be established, with regular maintenance planned to preserve the natural environment. The costs for establishing and maintaining the buffer will be covered by the Wechi Management Company (WMC).
