Curaçao Couple Named Animal Rescuers of the Year 2025 at Dutch DierenLot Congress

WILLEMSTAD - Miriam and Marcel Bleeker of Kitten Rescue Curaçao have been awarded the title Animal Rescuers of the Year 2025 during the annual DierenLot congress in the Netherlands — the first time the honor has ever gone to animal rescuers living on Curaçao.

The prestigious award recognizes individuals and groups who make a significant contribution to animal welfare. For the Bleekers, the acknowledgement highlights years of dedicated work improving the lives of cats across the island.

Major Impact on Curaçao’s Cat Population

In its official report, the jury praised Miriam and Marcel for their strong teamwork and the substantial impact of their initiatives aimed at managing the island’s cat population. Through rescue operations, feeding programs at selected locations and regular large-scale sterilization campaigns, the couple has helped stabilize and humanely reduce the number of stray and abandoned cats.

Their efforts have not only improved the welfare of countless animals but also contributed to a healthier, more manageable urban environment.

According to the jury, the Bleekers serve as an example for other animal welfare organizations on Curaçao and throughout the Dutch Caribbean. Their work demonstrates how local commitment, structured programs and collaboration can create lasting positive change.

The recognition from DierenLot marks a milestone for Curaçao’s animal welfare community and shines a spotlight on the growing network of volunteers dedicated to protecting the island’s animals.
