Curaçao Considering Break from Kingdom Baseball Team for Future World Baseball Classic

| By Correspondent March 18, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao is exploring the possibility of competing independently in future editions of the World Baseball Classic, a move that could signal a major shift away from the traditional Kingdom team of the Netherlands.

According to reports in Dutch media, discussions are underway about Curaçao standing on its own in the next tournament cycle, rather than continuing as part of the combined Kingdom team that includes players from Curaçao, Aruba, and the Netherlands.

The Kingdom team has long relied heavily on Caribbean talent, with players from Curaçao forming the backbone of the roster. In recent tournaments, stars with roots on the island have played a central role in the team’s international competitiveness.

However, growing ambitions within Curaçao’s baseball community are fueling interest in greater independence on the international stage. The island already fields its own national team in regional competitions and has seen increased development of its domestic baseball structure, including the launch of a professional league in recent years.

The idea of competing separately is not entirely new. Since the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles in 2010, Curaçao has maintained its own national identity in several sporting contexts, even while its players remain eligible to represent the Netherlands in major tournaments like the World Baseball Classic.

If Curaçao were to move forward independently, it could reshape the balance within international baseball, as the Kingdom team would lose a significant portion of its top talent. At the same time, it would give Curaçao the opportunity to build its own national team identity on the global stage.

No final decision has been announced, but the discussions highlight increasing momentum within Curaçao’s baseball sector to take the next step in its international sporting development.
