THE HAGUE - The governments of Curaçao, Aruba and Sint Maarten have contributed extensively to the reporting of the Kingdom of the Netherlands for the fourth cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR).
The report was submitted to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in August, but was only sent to the Dutch House of Representatives today by Minister Hanke Bruins Slot of the Interior and Kingdom Relations.
The UPR is a peer review mechanism, in which the human rights situation in all UN member states is assessed in 4.5-year cycles. This process, which takes place under the auspices of the UN Human Rights Council, offers Member States the opportunity to showcase the actions they have taken to improve the human rights situation in their own country. The other UN member states can then make recommendations about where they see further opportunities for improvement.
On November 15, 2022, the oral review of the Kingdom will take place in Geneva. This 'hearing' also uses reports submitted by regulators and civil society organizations.
