Curaçao Animal Rights Foundation commemorates its 12-year anniversary

WILLEMSTAD - On Friday May 29, the Curaçao Animal Rights Foundation (CARF) celebrates its 12th anniversary. CARF was founded in 2008 by a group local animal advocate. Over the past twelve years, the foundation has successfully rescued, rehabilitate and rehomed close to 2.000 dogs ― both on the island and abroad.

CARF does not receive any government funding and relies solely on volunteers, donations and fundraising events to pay for the (vetting) care of the dogs in their rescue. Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) it is impossible to celebrate this year's anniversary with a fundraising event. Sheila Maal, representative of the CARF: "It will be a sober celebration this year. Nevertheless, we would like to commemorate our 12th anniversary with volunteers, sponsors, and other individuals who support our rescue efforts."

CARF currently takes care of more than 100 dogs, the majority of which are suitable for adoption. Due to the coronavirus, adoptions have been put on hold while the foundation continues to rescue abandoned, homeless, and injured animals in dire situations. Ever since the pandemic hit, it's been a very stressful time for CARF. Every day, the foundation receives multiple requests to accept dogs while the number of available foster homes is dropping.

"Over the last few weeks, we have taken in several dogs including two mother dogs and their offspring. All dogs rescued by us are examined by a vet as soon as possible so that the necessary vaccinations and parasite-fighting treatments can be carried out. In addition, all dogs are sterilized and chipped and fed twice a day. So these costs are adding up literally on a day-by-day basis," explains Maal.

Foster families wanted
Due to COVID-19, several volunteers and foster families have decided to leave the island. CARF is currently looking for people who would like to temporarily foster one or multiple dogs. By placing dogs in foster homes, they are given time and space to socialize and get used to domestic life. This will ultimately increase their chances of a successful adoption.

Donate goods or money
In addition to monetary donations to MCB account number 21199501, CARF can always use cleaning products (including bleach, paper kitchen rolls, garbage bags, dishwashing liquid, etc.). These can be donated by the public at the Claus Clinic at Anasaweg 7 in Dominguito.
