WILLEMSTAD – Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas received Suriname’s new Consul General, Joraisa Pokie, for a courtesy visit on Tuesday, September 15, with discussions focusing on opportunities to strengthen cooperation between Curaçao and Suriname in several strategic sectors.
The meeting provided an opportunity for Pisas and Pokie to become acquainted and exchange views on areas where the two countries could deepen their existing relationship.
During the talks, Pokie highlighted several sectors with potential for increased cooperation. These included justice, where positive developments in bilateral cooperation have already taken place, as well as agriculture, education and maritime navigation.
According to the government, Curaçao and Suriname could benefit from sharing knowledge and experience in these areas while exploring concrete initiatives that serve the interests of both countries.
Agriculture could be particularly relevant as Curaçao seeks opportunities to strengthen regional cooperation and reduce its dependence on imported food. Suriname, with its considerably larger agricultural sector and natural resources, could potentially become an important partner in this area.
Developments in Suriname’s emerging oil and gas industry were also discussed.
The rapidly developing sector is expected to become increasingly important to Suriname’s economy and could provide opportunities for exchanging expertise and experience with Curaçao, which has a long history in the regional oil, storage and energy industry.
Maritime cooperation was another subject addressed during the meeting, potentially providing opportunities to strengthen connections between the two countries and facilitate greater economic exchange.
The government described the meeting as open and constructive. Both sides expressed their intention to further strengthen the relationship between Curaçao and Suriname and identify concrete opportunities for expanded cooperation.
Pokie recently assumed her position as Suriname’s Consul General and will represent the country in its diplomatic relations and activities in Curaçao.
